Project Executive Summary:
Ultra wide band (UWB) technology is considered a perfect candidate that perfectly suits the needs for a high speed short range access for wireless services. One of the major limitations in using this technology is their limited wireless reach. A feasible solution to the problem of reach extension of UWB signals is to transmit these signals to the end users via optical fibers, a concept which leads to the development of ultra wide band over fiber (UWBoF) systems.
A typical UWBoF system consists of optical and electrical communications chains whose performance has to be optimized simultaneously prior to system implementation. Thus, simulating such systems turns out to be a multi-disciplinary problem in which the governing equations are incompatible for co-simulation within the traditional environments in existing software packages. For example, the combined optical and wireless transmission performance of UWBoF systems using the designed UWB signals is investigated using cooperative simulation between pure microwave design and simulation software packages ,such as the HFSS, and optical design and simulation software packages, such as OptiSystem® or VPI Transmission Maker® . This cooperation needs a common dual compatible programming environment, usually MATLAB®.
Therefore, it is important to provide designers, engineers and researchers with a reliable simulation framework that can accurately and efficiently predict and/or optimize the UWBoF system behavior in a single integrated opto-electronic simulation environment.
